Clinical Opportunities

Karen Horney Clinic

The Karen Horney Clinic has been closely affiliated with the American Institute for Psychoanalysis since it opened its doors in 1955 to fulfill the founders’ dream to offer low-cost psychoanalysis and psychotherapy to the community and to provide clinical facilities for the training of AIP students. The Karen Horney Clinic is an Article 31 clinic licensed by the State of New York. It is unique in its scope and in its commitment to provide psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to its wide range of patients. Candidates and students in the training programs of the AIP treat patients at the clinic (please view each program to see the clinical requirements). Trainees also have the possibility of gaining clinical hours towards their New York State licensure as well as working in a fee-for-service capacity. The Clinic is open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. All decisions on treatment, patient assignments, supervision, clinic regulations and requirements are at the discretion of the Executive Director of the Clinic. The clinic provides psychiatric evaluation, consultation, and has a full time administrative and support staff.

Faculty of the AIP and advanced candidates provide teaching and supervision for students at the Karen Horney Clinic. Most importantly, the faculty of the AIP offers intensive ongoing clinical supervision for students who decide to gain additional practical experience in the Clinic setting.
