The American Institute for Psychoanalysis was founded in 1941 by Karen Horney and other psychoanalysts who passionately opposed the dogmatism that characterized psychoanalysis at the time. The AIP has remained true to the principles of its founders who emphasized avoiding conceptual rigidities, and responding to ideas, whatever their source, in a spirit of scientific and academic democracy. This philosophy is reflected throughout our various training programs and projects.

Our faculty is aware of the ever-changing field in which we work.  As Muriel Ivimey, one of the founding members, wrote: “The Institute is fully prepared and equipped to carry on its teaching as experiment and experience show the way.” Our faculty continues to teach in this tradition and to incorporate this perspective in their contributions to the professional literature and through their participation in professional organizations.

In addition to our long-standing training programs in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, we also have a New York State licensure qualifying program in psychoanalysis, a post-degree fellowship training program done in conjunction with the Karen Horney Clinic, and we have established the Karen Horney Psychoanalytic Institute in China. The institute is a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytical Association.

Our ultimate aim is to develop well-rounded, open-minded, strong clinicians who can apply their deep understanding of the inner world to their clinical work across various settings and patient populations. The Institute’s close association with the Karen Horney Clinic for over sixty years provides our trainees with opportunities for clinical experience.  Through mentoring by senior faculty and our referral service we support candidates in developing private practices.

We welcome your interest in our training programs and opportunities for clinical experience. We invite you to attend our Scientific Meetings, lectures, continuing education credit workshops and courses available throughout the year.   Please, contact us if you have any questions or desire further information.

We hope that you will become part of the AIP community.
