FAQ

How long does therapy last?

Read about our practice and how therapy works

Because it attempts to affect deeper layers of the psyche, at the sources of harmful beliefs and behavior, psychoanalysis lasts longer and is more intense than psychotherapy. In full psychoanalysis, you would expect to see your psychoanalyst at least three times per week. The investment is considerable, but it can provide significant benefits in terms of one’s ability to love and work (as Freud phrased it).

Psychotherapy is shorter-term than psychoanalysis. At AIP, you would expect to meet with your psychotherapist twice a week.

Where feasible, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is provided in the American Institute for Psychoanalysis (AIP) building on East 62nd Street.

In many cases (and this is certainly true during the pandemic), treatment is available online.
