Overview:

If psychoanalysis is an impossible profession, being a mother is the most impossible role to get right. The movie examines motherhood in a time of gender fluidity and the challenges it poses.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to discuss three stages of the role of women in people’s lives.
2. Participants will enumerate instances of the influence of technology on theory.
3. Participants will be able to list applications of advances in surgery to understanding of gender theory

Presenter:

Arlene Kramer Richards, EdD, is a training and supervising analyst with the Contemporary Freudian Society (CFS) and the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). In addition, she is a faculty member at CFS, the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, and Tongi Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China where she developed the Wuhan China Psychotherapy Program. She is a member of the Board of the American Psychoanalytic Association and IPA. Dr. Richards’ psychoanalytic writings help clarify issues of female development as she explores perversion, loneliness and the internal world of artists and poets. She has written extensively on these topics and is the co-editor of Encounters with Loneliness: Only the Lonely which won the Gradiva Award in 2014. Her recent book Psychoanalysis: Listening to Understand is a compilation of her selected works. Dr. Richards is in private practice in Manhattan.

The American Institute for Psychoanalysis, SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers. #0338
